HD20 long-life methanol engine oil is an SAE 0W-20 lube made for methanol engines that use direct injection or port injection. When methanol is burnt, it makes sour waste and adds more water to the oil system than when petrol or diesel is burnt. Due to its low ash and high base number, HD20 solves these problems. It has a TBN of 8.5 mg KOH/g, a kinematic viscosity of 8.74 mm²/s at 100°C, and a viscosity index of 203. It is suitable for methanol hybrid and range extended vehicle platforms.
Normal engine oils are based on the combustion chemistry of petrol or diesel. Methanol burns differently. It creates acid compounds that over time damage the metal surfaces, and it has more moisture content than standard fuels, which can destabilise the oil coating during cold starts, and increase corrosion risk between service intervals.
One lubricant must incorporate acid neutralising alkalinity, moisture management and deposit control all in one formulation for methanol applications. A general purpose oil intended for petrol or diesel does not consider these criteria in the same way.
Acid Neutralisation & Corrosion Control
The burning of methanol generates acidic chemicals that, if not neutralised, are corrosive to metallic engine components. HD20 features an alkaline reserve evaluated at a TBN of 8.5 mg KOH/g, providing a buffer against acid building between oil changes. The alkalinity is maintained by the selection of detergent chemistry and not by a high sulfated ash concentration
Low Ash Formulation
Sulfated ash content is limited to 0.6% by weight. This lowers ash deposit development on valves and combustion chamber surface, which is a major issue for methanol engines with different deposit patterns compared to hydrocarbon fuels.
Detergent & Dispersant Package
Methanol engines suffer from piston deposits, carbon buildup and varnish due to the distinct combustion residue profile of the fuel. The HD20 detergent and dispersion package keeps these impurities floating in the oil, stopping them from adhering to engine surfaces.
Foam Control and Emulsion Stability
Methanol fuel puts more water into the oil system than conventional fuels. HD20 contains Foam Control Additives to minimise aeration during regular engine running. HD20 is developed to maintain emulsion stability and minimise water dropout at low temperatures.
